Zune. Does it deserve our attention?

iPod vs Zune

Speaking again about Microsoft. Have you ever heard about Microsoft’s new mp3 player called Zune? No? Well, then you probably live in a cave… Just joking.??

Zune is a new Microsoft’s mp3 player. It’s positioned like a famous Apple iPod’s rival. Saying secret - it’s full copy of iPod. It will have even the same service, like iTunes, but with other name. When only Zune be released it will has one specification - 30 gb model. And no TVs and movies! But for what there is big display? Microsoft says it will make it later. They promise to spend huge money on advertising Zune. I want to believe… Like Mulder’s poster at his office. Of course they will spend money, but will be the result positive? No one can say exactly. We must see what Apple will answer

Tiny projector has been created. Waiting mass release

The smallest projector at the worldFraunhofer researchers has made really small projector. It’s real side is few more than a coin. You will ask about area of usage for such projector. Of course mobile phones! Just imagine.
You are going to your work by subway. You have nothing to do. And you take your mobile phone and project image on the back of the nearby human! And just watch TV. Ok, maybe it’s sound funny, but nowadays mobile phones provide small, dull display. Said, but I can’t see another possibilities for this device. Maybe you’ll find?
P.S. I can’t find any information about this projector on official Fraunhofer Institute’s site

Try single disc for both new DVD formats

HD-DVD vs Blu-RayAs you know Microsoft and Sony are real rivals on the market of DVD formats. Sony tries to advance with it’s Blu-Ray. Everything was good, until Microsoft introduced own “next” dvd format - HD-DVD. As for me each format has advantages and disadvantages. Blu-ray is fast and big. HD-DVD is a bit smaller, but much cheaper. But only customer will choose the best dvd format.
It was preamble. Now three employees from Warner Bros (funny, heh?) patented dvd disc which will have both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray layer. Now it’s really strange - why have only one layer of one standard if you can have both of it? But there is rising question - each format has itself few layers. How they will fight with it? I don’t know. We’ll wait till some press release. As for me I don’t see future for this innovation. But it’s my opinion. And what’s yours?

Motorola bought Symbol

SymbolMotorola has bought Symbol for a “symbolic” price of $3.9 bln. Motorola says it will buy till late 2006 or early 2007. Well, nice purchase. My congrats to them. But there are few questions rising: for what purposes Motorola has bought Symbol and what it will do next with this company. I’ll try to answer first question.Motorola
As you know at last time Symbol was too active on making new technologies on mobile computers, and now it has over 900 patents. As for me Motorola wants to improve itself on the market of mobile computers. Symbol has had connections with Microsoft. Will Microsoft continue co-work with Motorola? As you know Motorola builds it’s smartphones on Linux too. Well, future will show us all.

Toshiba recalls Sony laptop batteries

Dynabook
What can you say about it? Toshiba recalls 340000 Sony laptop batteries! It’s too many for not “affect earnings” as Ohmori said. It’s not first time. Dell and Apple already recalled over 6 mln laptops with Sony batteries. I hope Sony will realize it’s mistake and won’t repeat it…

Europe don’t like Vista

Microsoft tries not to forget about it’s latest OS called Vista. But all other world doesn’t forget about it. This time European Union Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes commented Microsoft, like a monopolist (something already known, he?). She noticed, that in Vista will be built-in many Microsoft applications, which will help user, but will “destroy” Microsoft’s rivals.
What can I say about it… Microsoft just provides basic applications. Their possibilities are limited. And third companies make really professional applications for Windows. I don’t see any hint on monopolies. Maybe you can see it?
