Windows 6.0CE is announced
Microsoft has announced new version of mobile system - Windows 6.0CE. The main difference from older versions - the kernel will be 100% available! So any other fan can change kernel to make it available for own Pocket PC. I’m waiting for xda-developers.com to make new version for my Himalaya.
But let’s talk about new system. There are several main enhancements said to include:
- Multitasking enhancements - CE 6.0 supports up to 32,000 processes with 2 GB of virtual memory per process, versus CE 5.0’s maximum of 32 processes with maximum of 32 MB virtual memory each
- Improved performance — OS processes are moved to kernel space; GWES, device driver manager, and file system manager are in kernel space for improved performance
- Addition of kernel mode drivers — CE 5.0 only supported user mode drivers; kernel mode drivers offer performance, user mode drivers provide stability; additionally, there can be multiple instances of the user mode driver manager
- Strict partitioning of user mode and kernel mode
Taken from Windowsfordevices. Well, some comments forward:
- Have you ever used more than 5 programs at the same time? I don’t. So this enhancement isn’t useful;
- Improved performance is good, really good. But what about security? Will it be on high level? Everything is integrated and the system is opened… Well you understand, what I mean;
- Stability is nice, but it’s promised, since 1st version. By the way, it has passed 10 years, since first announcement of Windows 1.0CE;
- Look up^.
Also Microsoft promises new 3 set of applications integrated in system. Not many, as you can see, but I think it better must be useful, but a little than useless but many. It is
cellular communications (new?!), video projector technology (as for me - awesome) and set-top box and network device technologies. I will stop on the last point for more information.
Set-top box and network device technologies provide advantages for developers, not users. In general - developers’ life will be easier.
What I can point out that the design will be more similar to Desktop Windows. Just look at snapshot:

Also there are several innovations, but they are interesting only for developers. Who’s interested can go directly to Windowsfordevices.
