Sony’s bad day… or maybe year?

SonyAfter all problems with Sony, especially talking about battery recalls Sony has new problems. This time Sony receives subpoena from US Department of Justice. Department wants to discuss Sony’s SRAM business. Allow me to remind you, that DRAM makers also have had problems with law. Sony has equal problems – price-fixing on the market. DOJ decided to destroy monopolies or to establish order? I hope its the second point

AMD and ATI are AMD now

As you know some time ago AMD has bought ATI. Today the fusion is completed. AMD totally has ATI now. And there is new site for ATI – ati.amd.com. As AMD has announced the brand “ATI” will stay alive for some time. Further the graphic processors will be called AMD. And the base color will change from red to green. Let’s think what AMD have won buying ATI. As for me – nothing. Just new profits. It doesn’t bring any advantages on the market. Maybe AMD wants to try itself as a graphics productor? Maybe they want to take control over graphics production? Conquer new market? Many rumors, nothing specific

Intel and AMD roadmaps

Speaking about last Intel&AMD roadmaps
Some comments:

First half of 2007 year won’t be interesting for us, except Kentsfield. Intel has found nice time to release quad-core processor. No answer from AMD. But at other side no many surprises, just several new models. Fourth quality of 2006 is more interesting now. Intel will continue delevoping Conroe branch, AMD will answer by Athlon-FX series. Strange but there is nothing mentioned about Pentium. Intel promised to save this brand. At far future we’ll see unreachable now Altair and Yorkfield. But it will be next year. As for me – I’m waiting for Conroe Quad to buy :)

Asus increases notebook series by 3 models

Asus thought that its notebook series are small and added 3 new models. Each one is oriented for business. So let’s look at each model separately.

R1F

First model is called R1F. Its tablet PC which as it was written “offers a smart balance of mobility and performance with comprehensive security features that protect with both software as well as hardware solutions, providing a secure and convenient computing experience for business professionals on the go”. Interesting, how does it differ from existing models except new hardware? I don’t think there is built-in hardware firewall or some other protecting system. What I really like at this model is handwritten support. It’s really nice! Also LCD is converting up to 180 degrees, but if you’re not big business man, who shows presentations on notebook (actually real business man shows it on projectors) you won’t need this feature.
R2H

The other model is called R2H. It looks like Pocket PC, but it’s really Table PC. This notebook has built-in web-camera to communicate with other world. Also as R1F it has handwritten input support. This is actual for this notebook, because there is no other input :D . This system is weak comparing to others, but much enough for office applications. And my opinion is its battery lives much more than R1H. So this notebook is oriented for beginning businessman.

VX1

And last notebook is called Lamborghini VX1. It’s classic notebook with many features. Long-lasting battery, slim design, wireless connections. This notebook is oriented for really big business man. According to its price – $4888. Not anyone can afford it.

P.S. By the way, Lamborghini edition which was always Asus top-model has “only” 7400GS video card. So gamers, forget about this model.

Benq profits are going down

BenqI can’t understand. Somebody pointed out, that Benq is a bankrupt. Now Benq is alive and even has some profits, but lower than last year. According to DigiTimes Benq has a lower profit down to 20% according to equal quarter last year and 10% down according to year profits. And that’s without Benq Mobile, which is non-profitable (it’s my opinion). And why did they buy this company? I mean Siemens. I suppose Siemens is happy now, due they have got rid off of unprofitable branch. Who can give some light at this dark situation? Is Benq really bankrupt? Or it’s just someone’s joke?

Google have bought history

This blog is about hardware, but sorry. I can’t miss it :) . Google have bought own garage where it was discovered in 1998. The funniest in this is that founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have bought the land from Google’s vice president – Susan Wojcicki. She was their renter. Woman rented 2 young guys a garage for $1700 per month. She had very far vision of software and internet in that time. And now she’s vice president. Sergey and Larry respect own history. And they have my respect for this.

Sony’s answer

Continuing about recalls… Sony interviewed all of these actions. And what is their answer? They are shocked! Of course I understand them; they weren’t ready for this numbers. But everything followed to this conclusion. Number of recalls is still increasing. I wonder why Sony is still in game. Oh, yeah. The answer is – because Sony is GIANT. That’ why. Almost no one can sink them. But shares are losing weight. Now is 8.6% low. What’ next? Sony will decrease own personal? I don’t know. I hope for happy end.

New recalls

There are new recalls. Lenovo recalls 520000 laptops with applied Sony batteries. I suppose Sony made this specially for other companies to lose money. Of course I’m just joking, but the number of recalls frightens me. I’ve already written about Toshiba recalls. Already there was a conference about problem of recalls. I wonder will Sony compensate all material losses for other companies. I advice you not to buy any laptop for next half year. The market must be stabilized. Just wait. Or laptop will blow up just at your hands. It’s a SonySony

Intel is hot

Intel is going to pay $1m for the new conception of PC design. Well, I don’t know what to say… They don’t have own designers? Invite Apple! Their Macs much more nice than simple PC. Hm, let’s think what we must change in this damned box:
at first shape – of course it must not be square. I hate this shape;
color – well, color is,of course, changeable, but by default it is white. Its stupid associations. I haven’t seen white PC for a few years;
material – nowadays manufacturers try to save money and our nature. I respect them (but not all). Maybe it must be from plastic. It’s cheaper, but of course not safer. But who moves his PC everyday? I think this idea must be developed;
As for me that’s enough. I repeat – just for me. Leave your comments what do you want to see at future PC? PCs which can make coffee will be considered as spam.

Asus updates laptop with Core 2 Duo

Asus W2Do you know Asus laptops multimedia series? It’s also called W-series. Asus adds new model to W2 series. Now with Core 2 Duo! Well, not bad. But I don’t know will someone use all of its power for full strength? Let’s look further… Well, what’s next change? Wow, ATI Radeon 1700 Mobility version! Hm, a real multimedia mobile center. Also Asus applied HD DVD ROM with HDMI output. HDMI spreads over the world. That’s nice. Unfortunately this is all changes. I hope with next release Asus will apply real 5.1 sound system ;)
