Laptop and Desktop Comparison

Several weeks ago I had a choice to change my own desktop to same-cost laptop. I have made my choice and I want to share gathered information with you. This is some sort of review. Several paragraphs were written on my PPC, when I was underground going home, so mistakes can be found. I hope this article will help your choice, like it helped me.

I must warn you - I have made some limits. Desktop’s or laptop’s price mustn’t be over $1000. Also I don’t consider Apple products such as Mac book, PowerBooks, etc. Desktop has installed Microsoft Windows. So laptop has. Nothing extra ordinal in configurations.

PCI-Express Now Outside the PC

Do you remember XG-Station? Asus will have to share its profits with others. XG-Station still isn’t launched (in Q2 2007), but other companies decided to unify external video card. They’ll do it with the help of PCI-Express bus. They have just approved PCI-E 2.0 specifications and soon PCI-E will become external technology. PCI SIG has specifications, but don’t want to share with anyone. This standard will be popular between graphics companies, such as ATI or Nvidia. External technology will be used to create a cable connecting computer with some device. Imagine external graphics card. No limits for developers. Size, thermal care, power source don’t matter. Now you have one box and soon there will be 2: computer and graphics card :) . Thanks to Molex and the Inquirer we have some pics of cables. I share one with you.

PCI-E Cables

Cables are shown from PCIe x1 (left) to PCIe x16 (right). Interesting that specifications still not available, but we have already working cables. And when external graphics cards will be released? Nobody knows. Don’t think that external PCI-E will be used just for graphics cards. Also it has a potential to be used in bridge between media devices and computers. HDDs, DVDs (HD-DVDs and Blu-rays in future) and I even don’t consider server segment, where is huge number of RAID massives.

Discrete Graphics for Mobile Systems

Users of mobile systems with weak mobile card now can breathe free. Asus presents XG Station. As for me - very interesting gadget. With his help you can play on notebook with the help of stationary video card and monitor. How you will ask? Just look at the picture above.Usage Scenario

Taken from Vr-zone.com

As you can see this station connects with notebook and monitor. It has built-in video card 7900GS, but you can replace it with more powerful. As for me very interesting now gadget. Now I don’t have to keep desktop. Just monitor. The incredible benefit is that there is no competition. What do you think about this gadget? Will you buy it? It will be available since Q2 2007. I’m waiting!

Notebooks and its future

As you can see in nowadays tendency is coming to miniaturizations. You can see it by browsing through my blog. Today I’m going to share about new bar, which was successfully bitten by Japanese scientists. This time they invented new hard drive for notebooks. The limit upraised to 300 GB for 1 hard drive. Video designers can be happy. Now they can take their video studio with them. I have one friend video designer, as I call him, in one advertising agency. He has RAID massive with 3 hard drives. The sum of his space is 1.1 Tb! Of course 300 GB won’t leave all problems outside, but at least you will have more space integrated in notebook. You always can add external USB hard drives.

Asus presents luxury notebook

Asus notebook

Asus have nothing to do, but just make new notebooks as for me. This time it is new brand - luxury notebook. The main difference between luxury notebook and mainstream notebooks, such as R1F. Of course Lamborghini series is exclusion. This series always were oriented for big businessman and people, who just like to have famous brand. (more…)

Asus increases notebook series by 3 models

Asus thought that its notebook series are small and added 3 new models. Each one is oriented for business. So let’s look at each model separately.

R1F

First model is called R1F. Its tablet PC which as it was written “offers a smart balance of mobility and performance with comprehensive security features that protect with both software as well as hardware solutions, providing a secure and convenient computing experience for business professionals on the go”. Interesting, how does it differ from existing models except new hardware? I don’t think there is built-in hardware firewall or some other protecting system. What I really like at this model is handwritten support. It’s really nice! Also LCD is converting up to 180 degrees, but if you’re not big business man, who shows presentations on notebook (actually real business man shows it on projectors) you won’t need this feature.
R2H

The other model is called R2H. It looks like Pocket PC, but it’s really Table PC. This notebook has built-in web-camera to communicate with other world. Also as R1F it has handwritten input support. This is actual for this notebook, because there is no other input :D . This system is weak comparing to others, but much enough for office applications. And my opinion is its battery lives much more than R1H. So this notebook is oriented for beginning businessman.

VX1

And last notebook is called Lamborghini VX1. It’s classic notebook with many features. Long-lasting battery, slim design, wireless connections. This notebook is oriented for really big business man. According to its price - $4888. Not anyone can afford it.

P.S. By the way, Lamborghini edition which was always Asus top-model has “only” 7400GS video card. So gamers, forget about this model.

Notebook users can be not only users, but gamers

Notebook

NVIDIA has released new mobile graphics card GeForce Go 7950 GTX. Man, this card faster for my desktop… Interesting what about energy usage. Still battery problems are remembered. And if this video monster will be provided with AMD processor? What batteries will we need to keep it all power on? And cooling systems? I wonder what performance this video card will have. If more than 7600GT desktop version I’ll be surprised. And who will be the customer of this product? Extremely mobile and rich gamers. Very small area of usage. But it will be. If the price goes down at nearest future, they’ll become more moderate

New recalls

There are new recalls. Lenovo recalls 520000 laptops with applied Sony batteries. I suppose Sony made this specially for other companies to lose money. Of course I’m just joking, but the number of recalls frightens me. I’ve already written about Toshiba recalls. Already there was a conference about problem of recalls. I wonder will Sony compensate all material losses for other companies. I advice you not to buy any laptop for next half year. The market must be stabilized. Just wait. Or laptop will blow up just at your hands. It’s a SonySony

Asus updates laptop with Core 2 Duo

Asus W2Do you know Asus laptops multimedia series? It’s also called W-series. Asus adds new model to W2 series. Now with Core 2 Duo! Well, not bad. But I don’t know will someone use all of its power for full strength? Let’s look further… Well, what’s next change? Wow, ATI Radeon 1700 Mobility version! Hm, a real multimedia mobile center. Also Asus applied HD DVD ROM with HDMI output. HDMI spreads over the world. That’s nice. Unfortunately this is all changes. I hope with next release Asus will apply real 5.1 sound system ;)

Notebook developers discuss problems about batteries

After recent recalls, notebook developers make a conference discussing problems of batteries, new technologies of battery saving.
Notebook
As for me the answer is clear. Sony must be prohibited to make any batteries. We must decline existing technology of batteries. It’s too old and ineffective for nowadays gadgets. New technology must be developed from 0. Because all existing technologies are in dead end. I think developers are realizing this, but don’t want to do anything. To change batteries, they must discover new equipment, technology, teach new specialists. All of these need money. But why discover new, if we can develop existing? Of course I’m mistaking, but it looks like I’m right
