AMD and ATI are AMD now

As you know some time ago AMD has bought ATI. Today the fusion is completed. AMD totally has ATI now. And there is new site for ATI - ati.amd.com. As AMD has announced the brand “ATI” will stay alive for some time. Further the graphic processors will be called AMD. And the base color will change from red to green. Let’s think what AMD have won buying ATI. As for me - nothing. Just new profits. It doesn’t bring any advantages on the market. Maybe AMD wants to try itself as a graphics productor? Maybe they want to take control over graphics production? Conquer new market? Many rumors, nothing specific

Intel introduces versions of Bearlake

As you know, Intel soon will release new chipset for it’s platform called Bearlake (975 in old style). Intel plans to make few variations on the chipset. There will be 6 (!!!) versions. They are Bearlake-Q, Bearlake-QF, Bearlake-X, Bearlake-P, Bearlake-G+ and Bearlake-G. As usual there will be deluxe version, standard version and version with integrated graphics. But I don’t understand for what customers will be other chipsets. I’m talking about Bearlake-G+. It will have advanced integrated graphics? Intel and advanced graphics? Good joke. As I think Bearlake-Q and Bearlake-QF will be for quad-cores processors. Bearlake-X and Bearlake-P for simple(?) Core Duos. Well, all of this is just my suggestions. Time will show who is right

Quad Battles

IntelAs you know Intel is going to release a quad-core processor in 2007. And its name is Yorkfield. AMD don’t want to be an overtaking, so its answer will be Altair (don’t remind you anything?) As always AMD wants to differ from Intel. Let’s see, what they are (differences). At first it’s the technology process. AMD still undertake 65 nm process, meanwhile Intel already has some prototypes on 45 nm. So the size of the cores will be corresponding. Next difference is in cache. AMD has dedicated L2 cache for each core (4×512kb). Yorkfield has common L2 cache, which will be shared between cores. The capacity is 12 mb(2×6 mb). And the size of the processor will be dramatically smaller than Altair’s. I have forgotten to mention: Altair will have common L3 cache for 2 mb. So in sum we have 4 mb cache for Altair and 12 mb for Yorkfield. If count up all megabytes for each core Altair will fail. 2mb+512 kb vs. 12 mb. But we’ll see how Intel will realize sharing the cache between cores.
And the last difference is in instructions. Yorkfield will have new 50 instructions called SSE4. Who can tell me, what advantages has SSE3?
The results of the battle we’ll see next year. But be aware - the battle has already begun AMD

Intel is hot

Intel is going to pay $1m for the new conception of PC design. Well, I don’t know what to say… They don’t have own designers? Invite Apple! Their Macs much more nice than simple PC. Hm, let’s think what we must change in this damned box:
at first shape - of course it must not be square. I hate this shape;
color - well, color is,of course, changeable, but by default it is white. Its stupid associations. I haven’t seen white PC for a few years;
material - nowadays manufacturers try to save money and our nature. I respect them (but not all). Maybe it must be from plastic. It’s cheaper, but of course not safer. But who moves his PC everyday? I think this idea must be developed;
As for me that’s enough. I repeat - just for me. Leave your comments what do you want to see at future PC? PCs which can make coffee will be considered as spam.

GSS Solution Opens Mobile Devices as Advertising Platform

I have read about this at the friendly blog allpointsblog.com. The origin is on Yahoo. I don’t have any words to say. It’s… It’s… Damn! What they want to do with us? I will throw my cell phones away! 2 phones full of advertisements. It’s too complicated for me. And they are telling that they will send advertisements in the dependence of the place, where we are. So if I’m in rest room I will get advertisement about new toilet paper? GSS, I hate you!GSS

Notebook developers discuss problems about batteries

After recent recalls, notebook developers make a conference discussing problems of batteries, new technologies of battery saving.
Notebook
As for me the answer is clear. Sony must be prohibited to make any batteries. We must decline existing technology of batteries. It’s too old and ineffective for nowadays gadgets. New technology must be developed from 0. Because all existing technologies are in dead end. I think developers are realizing this, but don’t want to do anything. To change batteries, they must discover new equipment, technology, teach new specialists. All of these need money. But why discover new, if we can develop existing? Of course I’m mistaking, but it looks like I’m right

3D TV is going to attack our home

3DTVAccording to this post researchers are going to replace our common TVs with 3D ones. As for me it sounds at least funny. Let’s remember HDTV. What’s now with it? Of course it is spreading all over world, but not so fast as it was expected. Movie makers still making films using old technologies. To make HDTV scenes they need special equipment, which costs money. And now 3d… Again new technologies, equipment, other stuff. And of course new specialists. Will they invest money at 3D? I don’t think so. Especially at next 10 years. First HDTV must be at each house. And then 3D time will come. Not sooner. Bite me, if I’m wrong

Tiny projector has been created. Waiting mass release

The smallest projector at the worldFraunhofer researchers has made really small projector. It’s real side is few more than a coin. You will ask about area of usage for such projector. Of course mobile phones! Just imagine.
You are going to your work by subway. You have nothing to do. And you take your mobile phone and project image on the back of the nearby human! And just watch TV. Ok, maybe it’s sound funny, but nowadays mobile phones provide small, dull display. Said, but I can’t see another possibilities for this device. Maybe you’ll find?
P.S. I can’t find any information about this projector on official Fraunhofer Institute’s site

Try single disc for both new DVD formats

HD-DVD vs Blu-RayAs you know Microsoft and Sony are real rivals on the market of DVD formats. Sony tries to advance with it’s Blu-Ray. Everything was good, until Microsoft introduced own “next” dvd format - HD-DVD. As for me each format has advantages and disadvantages. Blu-ray is fast and big. HD-DVD is a bit smaller, but much cheaper. But only customer will choose the best dvd format.
It was preamble. Now three employees from Warner Bros (funny, heh?) patented dvd disc which will have both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray layer. Now it’s really strange - why have only one layer of one standard if you can have both of it? But there is rising question - each format has itself few layers. How they will fight with it? I don’t know. We’ll wait till some press release. As for me I don’t see future for this innovation. But it’s my opinion. And what’s yours?
